Venice: Skewered Circles
This piece shows the affect color can have. You can see the original design from a black and white mapping of a small section of the floor of San Marco's cathedral in Venice done in the 19th century. I have used this complete drawing as inspiration for a number of pieces. Even though we are working with circles, the entire design is a rectangle, not a square. This makes the pieces much more dynamic and there is definitely a push-and-pull to it that would not have been there with a standard square.
I went further with this idea by choosing colors that would normally create a dissonance. This push and pull of the red and purple is mediated by the navy blue and cream.
The border is slightly simplified to keep the focus to the center.
